Unix System Administrator, October 2000-March 2006

Day-to-day tasks: Manage all Unix-related IT projects for the Center. Maintain workstations and servers for 30+ users utilizing 1 TB of confidential health care data. Maintain support contracts (Sun, Hummingbird), software licenses (Solaris, SAS, Uni-XEDIT, Connect:Direct), and inventory for all Unix software and hardware. Tools utilized include bourne/bash/csh shell scripting, Veritas Volume Manager, Legato/Solstice backup, CVS, and SAS management utilities. Liason to University's Office of Information Technology on all Center technical issues. Monitor Unix hosts for potential security and performance problems (IP Filter, syslog). Perform Windows (95, 98, 2000, XP) and Macintosh (OSX, OS9) desktop support on an as-needed basis in cooperation with other IT support staff. Periodic assistance with Novell, IIS and Exchange Server configuration. Advising Microsoft support staff on security issues.

Selected Project work: Worked as part of the Center's Risk Assessment team to devise a Center-Wide security policy and incident response procedure. Migrated Center Sun server and peripherals (D5200, A1000, 3510 and 3511 disk arrays, Sun L25 and ETL tape jukeboxes) from Solaris 7 on an Enterprise 6000 to Solaris 8, then to Solaris 9 on Sun Fire v880. Specified, procured, configured and maintained Sun workstations (Sun Blade, Ultra, and Sparcstations) for users as requested. Created and maintained connection from the Center's Unix system to the State's Data Center mainframes, negotiating installation of a dedicated T1 line and necessary hardware, configured software to manage automated and secure monthly data transfers using Connect:Direct software and NFS. Created documentation and tutorials for Center staff on HIPAA compliance and secure practices. Migrated all Unix users to SSH-based connection protocols from unsecured protocols.
